Rainforest Alliance

This symbol guarantees that the coffee was grown on farms that meet demanding social and environmental standards as verified by experienced inspectors.

The standards ensure that forests are protected; rivers, soils and wildlife conserved; workers treated with respect; paid fairly; properly equipped and given access to educational and medical care. The standards cover the critical social, environmental and economic issues and participating farms are on the path towards true sustainability.

Rainforest Alliance Certification is a way to guarantee that the coffee farms maintain the habitat of local wildlife and secure a future for the traditional coffee farmers. Much of the 11.8 million hectares of coffee worldwide is in or near high priority conservation areas.

The Certification Programme

Formerly known as ECO-O.K., is managed by the sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), a coalition of leading conservation groups in Belize, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and the US.

Already 7% of all the ethical coffee in trade is Rainforest Alliance certified. Many outstanding farms in eight countries have been certified and several hundred farms are in the process. With growing world-wide interest in agriculture that is fair to farmers and easy on the Earth, the demand for sustainably certified coffee is booming. Speciality coffee markets led the way with ethically sourced coffee's but mainstream manufacturers are now following this trend.

Supporting Coffee Farmers and Farm Workers

Rainforest Alliance certification helps farmers bear the erratic swings in the global market by giving them negotiating leverage and access to premium markets. By implementing the SAN sustainable farm-management system, farmers can reduce costs, gain efficiencies and improve crop quality.
